Facebook Mobile Event on November 3: Is the Facebook Phone Coming?

Written By Sam on 2 November 2010

Facebook is holding a ‘mobile event’ at its headquarters in California on November 3. According to the invitation, registration begins at 10:00 am and the event is scheduled to start at 10:30 am. And speculation is rife that this could be the unveiling of the much-anticipated Facebook Phone. It won’t be unexpected since TechCrunch reported that Facebook was working on an Android-based phone that would be built on the sole premise of enhancing and catering to social networking.

Also, the holiday season is perfect timing to come up with a new release like this considering the popularity if the social networking website as well.
The company, however, has been denying all reports about the launch of a Facebook Phone anytime soon. Though there are rumors about them working with INQ on a device that will hit AT&T, it would be premature to release one so soon, especially since developing an operating system and hardware takes considerably long.

Other obvious possibilities for the event then could be:

  • To officially introduce an Apple iPad application optimized for the larger screen which could also be the basis for the Facebook application for all the new tablets coming in the markets soon.
  • To provide a platform to showcase their Facebook Places location-based service.
  • To open up more applications to mobile developers since they have time and again expressed their aim to be a primarily mobile platform.

One can only wait and watch to see what they really bring to the table, until then its just speculation and expectation.
