The Indian telecom market is readying itself for Mobile Number Portability (MNP). Ads pertaining to MNP have already started appearing on national television. Bracing up for the event, BSNL has gone ahead and announced the launch of a new offer, doling out free connection and free GPRS, among other freebies, for all port-in customers who decides to switch to BSNL from any other carrier in the Haryana circle.

The MNP service was launched in Rohtak, Haryana on 25 Nov. BSNL’s latest announcement is the first on MNP. Considering how operators jostle for space and strive to put their best foot forward to entice consumers, there are more announcements likely to follow. Meanwhile, private carriers are gearing up for the show too. Idea Cellular’s latest ads have been giving consumers reasons to change over and ‘Get Idea’.

As for the BSNL offer, besides free in-porting, the operator will also provide its First Recharge Coupon (FRC) free if port-in is done via BSNL CSC in Haryana. That’s not all, at the time of activation, port-in customers will also be offered free Rs. 100 talktime over and above the free usage minutes that will come with FRC. All port-in customers will also be offered ‘unlimited GPRS’ free of charge for one month.

If you wish to place an MNP request at BSNL CSCs, here’s how to do it:

  1. SMS PORT to 1900 to receive your Universal Product Code (UPC).
  2. To port in, you will then need to submit an application form (CAF) along with an MNP form, complete with the UPC code at the CSC.
  3. You will be asked for an alternative number and required FRC. This will be recorded on forms for future reference.
  4. You will be given a virgin SIM card. Your desired number will be provided to you after 72-96 hours. You may also receive an SMS in your altternative number following which you will need to insert the new SIM in the mobile and dial ‘123’ to activate the BSNL mobile services.
  5. However, you should note that prior to activation of the BSNL services, you are likely to face an interruption in service/transit time of around 2 hours. During this time, you are not likely to receive services from either the port-in or port-out operator.
