Create Site Specific Browsers With Fluid to Run WebApps as Cocoa Desktop Application

Written By Sam on 27 September 2009

Are you tired of some random site errors or a flash ad crashing your browser and resulting in the loss of your data in another tab? If you are facing similar issues then you can try out Site Specific Browsers (SSB’s) which gives a great solution for all your WebApp’s. Using Fluid, SSBs can be created to run each your favorite WebApps as a separate Cocoa desktop application. Fluid gives any WebApp a home on your Mac OS X desktop complete with Dock icon, standard menu bar, logical separation from your other web browsing activity and many more. You can use Fluid to run YouTube, GTalk, Flickr, Basecamp, Delicious, .Mac webmail, Twitter or any other WebApp as a separate Mac desktop application. Fluid works very similar to Prism, but is based on Safari’s WebKit rendering engine.

Features of Fluid

Tabbed browsing is included in Fluid, with built-in userscripting, URL pattern, bookmarks, auto-software via the Sparkle Update framework, custom SSB icons and many more.

Fluid thumbnail plug-in allows you to browse the web with CoverFlow or iPhoto like thumbnail previews on the current page. CSS selectors are used for selecting links or images for a given URL pattern.

Fluid runs YouTube, GTalk, Flickr, basecamp, Delicious, and many more as a separate desktop application. Keeping your SSB dedicated to the original site you have specified, it opens all the other links in an SSB by default browser.

Fluid also converts your favorite WebApp into a menuExtra SSB which exists only as an icon in your OS X system Status Bar. This is perfect for sites you access multiples times a day.

Gmail, Yahoo! Mail, Facebook and Flickr SSB’s display “unread message count” Dock Badges similar to Apple Mail.

The other features include Session Restore, Minimal UI, Full-Screen Browsing, TinyURL, Custom User-Agent Strings, RSS/Atom Feed Detection, Web Preferences, Download Manager, Growl Notifications and Popup Blocker.
