Comex’s Untethered Jailbreak to be Released Only After Apple Releases iOS 4.3 Firmware?

Written By Sam on 6 January 2011

Apple released iOS 4.2.1 and there followed a spate of jailbreaks for both tethered and untethered use. Now, Apple seems bent on releasing a still updated iOS 4.3 firmware and developers will be kept busy with their tools for jailbreaks.

Comex, responsible for Spirit and JailbreakMe tools, was apparently contacted by an Italian site and asked whether he would release an untethered jailbreak tool for iOS 4.2.1. It seems Comex has grown smarter and his reply indicated that he would rather prefer to wait for Apple to come out with its iOS 4.3 before his next release but that depends on when Apple would release its next update. This query was put to Comex on his Twitter account.

This is what ensued:

Question: “Just like Steve Job’s ones, I would like to really receive a short and direct answer to my question: your next tool will jailbreak ready for iOS 4.2.1 or the next iOS 4.3?”

Comex replied:

“Depends when 4.3 is out.”

This may be rather disappointing news for some who expected a fully untethered jailbreak tool sooner. As of now, for untethered jailbreak for iOS 4.2.1 one has to use Redsn0w 0.9.7 where you need to have SHSH blobs of iOS 4.2b3 previously saved to Clydia. Redsn0w seems to be the only option as on date for untethered jailbreak provided you have the saved SHSH blobs. No saved SHSH blobs means you are limited to Redsn0w 0.9.6 for tethered jailbreaks of all iOS devices on iOS 4.2.1.

Release of the Comex tool depends on how soon Apple releases its iOS 4.3 or 4.2.2 which should happen before the major iOS 5.0 release slated for June 2011.
