Though Firefox 3.5 is still in beta phase, Mozilla has released the first alpha version of Firefox 3.6 which is code named Namoroka. Firefox 3.6 Alpha 1 is based on the Gecko 1.9.2 platform and has got many improvements related to user experience, performance, personalization, customization, task-based navigation, web application support and system integration. The first developer milestone of Firefox 3.6 Alpha 1 is intended for developers and testers only.

This Alpha of Namoroka includes features like better autocomplete recommendations based on frecency (a combined index of frequency and recency of use), better session restore, support for multiple background images, gradients and rem units, geolocation address support, support for the -moz-background-size CSS property, as well as fixes for a wide range of interactions between web content, CSS and plugins, a reorder event to embedded frames and iframes.

New features of Firefox 3.6 Alpha 1

  • Improved startup speed and overall responsiveness throughout the application.
  • Compositor (Phase 1), which moves Gecko to using one native widget per top-level content document.
  • Supports multiple background images.
  • The chromedir attribute has been replaced with a pseudoclass.
  • Added support for hiding the menu bar automatically.
  • Several new CSS3 properties including background size and gradients for background images
  • Speed improvements to the TraceMonkey JavaScript engine.
  • Better session restore features.
  • Geolocation “address” support is now available enabling user-readable position information.

Mozilla says that the final version of Firefox 3.6 will be available in the following few months. The latest version will definitely give a tough competition to other browsers like Chrome, IE and Opera.
