Today there are many people who owns a personal website. Apart from the common top-level domain names like .com, .org, .info, .net, .gov, .biz there are many other less familiar top-level domain names like .aero, .museum, .jobs, .mobi, .travel and many more.

.aero : This TLD is reserved for the global aviation community and is sponsored by the Societe Internationale de Telecommunications Aeronautiques. This domain is managed under the ICANN’s registrar system and you can register domains in .AERO through any ICANN accredited registrar.

.asia : This TLD is reserved for the Pan-Asia and Asia Pacific region and is sponsored by the DotAsia Organisation. DotAsia oversees the policies and governance of the “.Asia” TLD Registry and you can register a .ASIA domain name with a .ASIA Accredited Registrar.

.biz : This is not really a very less know TLD. There are many businesses on the Internet that are using the .biz for their website. It is restricted to businesses and is operated by NeuStar, Inc. NeuStar is responsible for all aspects of the .BIZ Registry, including operating the SRS, DNS, and WHOIS.


.cat : This TLD is reserved for the Catalan linguistic and cultural community and is sponsored by Fundació puntCat. cat must demonstrate some relationship with Catalan language and culture and put significant online content in Catalan. CAT also allows the registration of names with special characters specific to Catalan.

.coop : It is reserved for cooperative organizations and is sponsored by Dot Cooperation LLC. The purchase and use of .coop domain names is restricted only to bona fide cooperatives and cooperative service organizations that ascribe to the Cooperative Principles of the International Cooperative Alliance (ICA).

.jobs :This TLD is reserved for the human resource management community and it is sponsored by Employ Media LLC. .jobs serves the Global Human Resource Management Community by providing a fast and consistent method to communicate the exact online destination of their jobs page to job seekers. Sponsorship of .jobs is provided by the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM).

.mobi :This TLD is becoming very popular these days. It is reserved for consumers and providers of mobile products and services and is sponsored by mTLD Top Level Domain, Ltd. dotMobi is the company behind the .mobi domain and it publishes style guides known as the dotMobi Switch On! Guides to ensure that the user experience of the web on a mobile device is as good as possible.

.museum : It is restricted to museums, museums associations and museum professionals and is sponsored by the Museum Domain Management Association International (MDI). MuseDoma is responsible for the policies and operation of the .museum top-level domain.

.name : This tld is restricted to individuals and is operated by Verisign Information Services, Inc. It is designed for individuals to create a presence and make online communications easy and accessible. Though this was popular sometime back, not many people are really read to buy a .name domain for their personal use.

.pro : This is restricted to licensed professionals and is operated by Registry Services Corporation (dba RegistryPro). A .PRO domain name tells the world that you are a verified licensed professional and helps you establish trust online. Using a .PRO can be used by professionals and professional services on the Internet to obtain additional security features to comply with security and confidentiality obligations.

.tel : This tld is reserved for individuals and businesses to store and manage their contact information in the DNS and is sponsored by Telnic Limited. This tld can be used by businesses to store and manage all their contact information and keywords directly in the DNS without the need to build, host or manage a website.

.travel : This tld is reserved for entities whose primary area of activity is in the travel industry and it is sponsored by Tralliance Registry Management Company, LLC. Travel businesses and organizations can use .travel tld for e-commerce and promotion of their services with a .travel website, blog and email.

Many of the above tld’s were not very successful as they were introduced at a very late point in time. Most of the businesses are well established on some other tld’s like .com are not ready to change their website address.
