Google is readying for the launch of its set-top box platform, Google TV. Some top names in the television and internet industry, including Twitter, New York Times, CNN, HBO, CNBC, Turner Broadcasting and the NBA, have tied up with the search giant. So, the content is expected to be first rate. Taking care of the hardware for Google TV are Logitech and Sony. And with Logitech revealing details of the set-top device, Revue, and accepting pre-orders for it, the excitement level has gone up a notch.

Revue comes with an easy to set up companion box and an intuitive companion keyboard controller. It is a slim device with the Intel Atom CE4100 processor in its guts. To set up Revue you need three things:

  • HDTV with an HDMI port
  • Internet (Ethernet or Wi-fi)
  • Cable or Satellite Set Top Box with HDMI out

As long as your TV has an HDMI port, you are ready for Google TV. Simply connect your TV, cable or satellite set-top box, and your internet connection to the Logitech Revue, and your set-up is complete. Google TV being an open platform, with developers creating more apps and functionality, so the platform will update itself automatically, and you will get new features for free.

Besides HDMI input and output, 802.11a/b/g/n and 10/100 Ethernet, S/PDIF-out, and two USB 2.0 ports, Revue features:

  • A keyboard with integrated touch and directional controls
  • An infrared blaster
  • Logitech’s Unifying technology enabling you to connect up to six compliant accessories
  • Logitech accessories TV Cam and Vid HD software enable HD video calls of up to 720p, complete with call notification
  • Access to video from the web, photos from Flickr, games, and music from sites such as Pandora and Rhapsody

The device is available for pre-order and will cost $300 for a package that will include a keyboard, an HDMI cable, an IR blaster and a pair of AA batteries. Accessories like the webcam for video calls are available for pre-order separately; and you will have to shell out around $150 for the webcam alone. We also hear a Revue-specific version of the diNovo Mini will come for $130. The box is currently available for pre-order on the company’s website, Amazon.com and BestBuy.com. It is expected to be in retail stores in the US by the end of the month.

There is some great info in this post about a great product. Here at DISH Network we have had a few of these Logitech Revue to try out and I absolutely love this product. I’m a big Google fan, constantly searching for an actor’s name, or other movies they might have been in. So now instead of waiting for my phone to search or going downstairs to my computer, I wait for a commercial, and viola! Question answered.
